Mary A. Lee, 102, of Golden, died at 4:44 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2023, at Good Shepherd Home in Golden.
Born March 19, 1921, in Quincy, IL., Mary was the daughter of Edwin and Minnie Weber of Ursa, IL. She graduated from Mendon Township High School in 1938. She then attended MacMurray College in Jacksonville, IL. and later transferred to Iowa State College, Ames, IA., where she graduated two years later majoring in child development. She taught nursery school at the National Child Research Center in Washington, D.C.
Mary married Donald E. Lee of Hancock, IA., on December 2, 1944, at her parents’ home in Ursa. After serving as a navigator in the U.S. Aircorp he returned to Iowa State College where he graduated. Mary worked as a substitute teacher at various Aircorp locations while Donald served his country after which they lived in Humbolt, IA.
Mary and Donald later moved to Camp Point, Illinois where Donald served as a teacher for veterans who had served their country and returned home to farm. At the same time, they started the Lee Fertilizer Company in Camp Point.
Mrs. Lee was an active member of the First Christian Church in Camp Point where she had taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, as well as singing with the choir. She was also active in the Camp Point community volunteering with the Camp Point American Legion Auxiliary as well as numerous other groups throughout the community. In her later years, she volunteered at the Timberpoint Healthcare Center.
She enjoyed her family activities, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and also working in her garden as well as growing flowers.
Surviving are her children, Nancy Jakus, Mandeville, LA.; Kathy Hankins (Tom), Shell Knob, MO.; Diana Hartney (Chip), Highlands Ranch, CO.; and Bill Lee, O'Fallon, MO; her daughter in law, Susan Lee, Camp Point; her grandchildren, Tim Lee (Beth), Camp Point, and their children, Eric (Brooke), Megan, and Jonathan; Greg Lee (Jenny), Crown Point, IN., and their children, Terrell, Jackson, Abby, and Davion; Ben Lee (Karen), Bloomington, IL., and their children, Marcus and Nathan; Andrew Lee (Meghan), Mandeville, LA., and their children, Anderson, Caroline, and Laura; Adam Jakus of Chicago, IL.; Daniel Jakus, Alexandria, VA.; Kelly Jeffery (Jason), Sydney, Australia, and their children, Alana and Will; Jenny Hankins, Grand Junction, CO.; Kristi Hankins, St. Charles, MO.; Kit Hartney (Adrienne) Highlands Ranch, CO.; and their son Rowen; Aaron Hartney (Loren), San Dimas, CA., and their children, Noah, Isabella, and Izaiah; Justine Wright (Zachary), O'Fallon, MO., and their children, James and Lucy; and Ross Lee, Brooklyn, NY.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Warren Lee; her grandson, Matthew; her sister, Billie Peters Anderson; and her brother, Frederick "Fritz" Weber.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Camp Point. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Camp Point.
Visitation will be held Monday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 at the First Christian Church in Camp Point.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church in Camp Point Window Fund or the Shiloh Christian Children's Ranch.
