Dennis R. Speckhart, 76, of Camp Point, IL, died at 12:48 p.m. on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at his home.
Born January 18, 1948, in Quincy, IL, Denny was the son of Fredrick and Marian (Fischer) Speckhart.
Dennis, known as "Denny" or "Whip" to his friends, attended Quincy Public Schools until his family moved to Camp Point in 1961. He graduated from Camp Point Central High School in 1966.
After high school, Denny signed up and was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served with the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War and earned a Bronze Star for his service.
Upon completing his military service, Denny returned to Camp Point and joined his brothers in their crop and livestock farming operation, a career he continued until his death.
As a young man, Denny was an active member of the Melrose Champion 4-H Club. He played fast-pitch softball for the Golden Softball Team and enjoyed attending cattle shows. He also loved watching his niece and great-niece play volleyball.
In 2009, Denny, along with his brothers, was awarded the Adams County Beef Producers of the Year award. Denny will be remembered as a kind and thoughtful person, known for his wit and colorful language.
Survivors include his brothers, Wayne (Bonnie) Speckhart and Darrell Speckhart; his niece, Ashley (Justin) Wolf; and his great-niece, Raeleigh Wolf, all of Camp Point. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews: Brenda, “Boomer”, Alex, Adam, Lexi, and Sadie Williams; Dean, Rahna, and Megan Schwengel; and Sherry, Jacob, Caleb, and Layna Clingingsmith; as well as his cousins, Marilyn Maiers, Betty Speckhart, and Robert (Jenatte) Spreckhart.
Denny was preceded in death by his parents, Fredrick and Marian (Fischer) Speckhart; his paternal grandparents, William and Laura (Loos) Speckhart; and his maternal grandparents, William and Rose (Hoffmeister) Fischer.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at the Lummis-Hamilton Funeral Home in Camp Point. Burial with military honors will follow at Greenmount Cemetery in Quincy, IL.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Lummis-Hamilton Funeral Home in Camp Point.
Memorials may be made to the Raeleigh Anders-Wolf Educational Fund.
